Memphis, TN

JohnWhat has always impressed me about the Christian Brothers is their respect for all people, their compassionate, holistic approach to education, and their commitment to giving back to their communities and institutions.

I became aware of the Christian Brothers early in my life. Many family members went to Christian Brothers schools, and I grew up near Christian Brothers University (CBU). I attended CBU myself after transferring from the University of Memphis. The late Br. Edmund Whaley, a professor at CBU has been a great influence on my life, as has Br. Rob Veselsky, whose kind-heartedness inspired my involvement with the university. I felt, even then, the importance the Brothers placed on giving back. I felt the need to give back myself as thanks for my good fortune, so I served four years on the CBU board. In addition, I served as president of the CBU National Alumni Association.

A Lasallian Education itself is life-changing. A good Lasallian education can propel both the student and the family to higher levels. I’m reminded of a migrant farm working student who missed out on his elementary education because he was working as a tomato picker. He worked hard to catch up on his education and attended a public high school where he heard about Christian Brother University and their scholarship program for undocumented youth. He applied and was admitted to CBU on a full scholarship. Today, he is working at a Fortune 50 company and remains closely connected to the university where he gives back regularly.

For me, the COVID pandemic brought the question of legacy to the forefront. How do I want to be remembered? Following in the footsteps of the Brothers, I want to be known for giving back as well. Knowing the Brothers themselves, knowing their mission, and knowing their commitment to helping others made a legacy gift to the Christian Brothers the easiest decision I have ever made.
